ALERT TO WOEMA Members - Healthy Workforce Now! - June 9, 2009
[Sample letter you can send to Congress]
[email your Representative] [email your Senator]
Dear WOEMA member,
With Congress soon expected to finish legislation on national health care reform, WOEMA urges all WOEMA members to support ACOEM’s position statement on the role of Occupational Medicine in a reformed national health care system. Over the past year, WOEMA has worked closely with ACOEM to advance a set of principles that we believe are critical for the field of Occupational and Environmental Medicine in the years ahead. WOEMA has strongly advocated for health care coverage for America’s workforce, and believes that workplace preventive services deserve a central place among covered services.
Accordingly, WOEMA is pleased to support Healthy Workforce Now! – an ACOEM initiative that emphasizes the critically important role that occupational physicians should play in protecting and promoting the health of America’s workforce. This ACOEM initiative includes seven principles which we believe should have a prominent place in any proposal for health care reform:
• Creation of a federal Office of Worker Health and Productivity.
• Establishment of a President’s Council on Worker Health and Productivity.
• Emphasis on integrated health and productivity programs in workplaces.
• Required payment for workplace preventive services.
• Incentives for employers to develop comprehensive wellness programs
• Funding for Occupational Medicine residencies
• Funding for research in productivity enhancement
For more information about Healthy Workforce Now! please see the ACOEM website, www.acoem.org/healthyworkforcenow.aspx.
WOEMA joins ACOME in asking all of our WOEMA members to contact their own congressional Representatives and Senators, using the links provided on this page, the sample letter, and copy of Healthy Workforce Now! Let’s urge our federal representatives to incorporate these important principles into healthcare reform legislation. And once you’re done, please let us know!
Together we can strengthen the specialty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine by advancing the health and safety of America’s workers and the productivity of the American workforce.
Sincerely,
Steve Schumann, MD, President
